Project: Emergency Cash Assistance for War-Affected Children with Disabilities in Ukraine
Supported by Refugee Protection International and implemented by Ukrainian NGO Bright Kids Charity
Project Summary: Refugee Protection International is desperate to reach more children with disabilities trapped in war-torn Ukraine while we still can thanks to our grassroots partner Bright Kids Charity in Kyiv. Unable to walk or lacking the resources to flee, these frightened children are carried to and from basement shelters by single mothers as the missiles and shells fly.
Veronika, pictured below, is just 6 years old and suffers from cerebral palsy. When the Russian air strikes started in Zhytomyr Oblast, Veronika’s mother hid her in the bathtub, hoping to protect her from damage to windows or walls. On March 4th, 2022 a school in Zhytomyr was reportedly hit by a rocket, underscoring just how dangerous it is for these children.
With casualties rising and exit roads mined, RPI is helping Bright Kids to reach 6 times more children than they did before the February 24th invasion, providing families with urgently needed cash assistance and standing ready to help pay for the treatment of war injuries that children may sustain in the dark weeks ahead.
